Subject: login for members only area on a site

I am concerned about lost information by members for login information.  I would like to avoid having to remind people of their info. 
Can I direct members, for example, to use the front part of their email addresses as their username?  Or can you recommend some other system on this?
Does the login screen allow me to add directions/suggestions for choosing a username?
